Kyle Graupe

Machine Learning. Data Science. Simulation. Statistics.

Hello, my name’s Kyle!

I am a Data Scientist with many years of experience applying a wide variety of technical skills to tackle complex data problems and provide actionable insights to drive business decisions. I have a passion for machine learning and continue to learn about the technology and the discipline. My ambition is to harness my mathematical, statistical, and computational acumen to unlock the full potential of your data and reveal its latent value.

When I'm not hunched over a mechanical keyboard, I enjoy and spending time with my friends and family, going to new restaurants, cooking, and much, much more.

Thank you for visiting my website and spending time to get to know me.

Education

  • M.S. in Modeling and Simulation Engineering
    Old Dominion University
Summary: During this Master’s program, I am concentrated my coursework in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Statistical Modeling. I supplemented this curriculum with courses in high performance computing, and cluster parallel computing, and have learned topics such as Bayesian Statistics, Markov Chains, Monte Carlo Simulations, Object Oriented Programming in C++, Input/Output Data Analysis, and more.

  • B.S. in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering
    Virginia Tech

Summary: In this Bachelor’s degree, I learned the fundamentals of engineering as it applies to mathematics, statistics, fluid dynamics, and structural mechanics. As the aerospace and ocean engineering discipline is dependent on computation, I developed a solid base of understanding in computer programming and a rudimentary understanding of machine learning.

Employment

  • Data Scientist - National Seating and Mobility
Dates: May 2023 to May 2024
Summary: As the sole Data Scientist at NSM, I was responsible for all things AI and Machine Learning within the organization. I conducted Customer Segmentation efforts, built machine learning internal tools, conducted advanced statistical analyses and EDAs, and much more!

  • Data Scientist — Shift Technology
Dates: July 2022 to January 2023
Summary: As a Data Scientist at Shift, I was responsible for completing a wide variety of tasks. I managed production of the company’s insurance claim fraud detection web application, conducted ETL on raw third party data, and most importantly, leveraged statistics and programming to unluck insights in the client data to drive the strategic roadmap for the continuous development of the fraud detection model.

The most interesting and engaging part of any project in this sector is utilizing the data available to drive the addition or tuning of new features or to influence strategy and decision making. This is the intrigue in data science and the primary driver of my interest in this space.

  • Marine Systems Engineer — THOR Solutions
Dates: May 2020 to May 2022
Summary: As a Marine Systems Engineer at THOR Solutions, I supported the United States Coast Guard’s Fast Response Cutter program management office. In this role, I was responsible for leveraging a variety of tools and first principle methods to improve the performance and reduce maintenance of the Sentinel Class cutter.

During my time, I led root-cause investigations into auxiliary system failure events by developing a data pipeline upon which we could use statistical and data centric methods to drive value and decisioning efficiency within the program. This was crucial as the FRC program had yet to go through a serious digitalization effort, which hampered the program’s ability to use advanced tools one would see in use in the private sector.

  • Naval Architect — Austal USA
Dates: July 2019 to May 2023
Summary: As a Naval Architect at Austal USA, I contributed to the structural engineering team assigned to the Independence class Littoral Combat Ship and the Expeditionary Fast Transport class ships. In this role, I learned how to implement engineering designs up to industry standards, how to manage engineering version control, and how to deliver a product to high US Navy standards. These skills are the fundamentals on which the rest of my career has been built to this point.

  • Undergraduate Researcher, ”Convolutional Neural Networks for Ship Wake Detection” — Virginia Tech
Summary: As an Undergraduate Researcher on this program, I learned the fundamentals of Convolutional Neural Networks and computer vision as it applies to object detection. This was my first introduction into the realm of machine learning, and has been an inspiration throughout my career. Building simulated, physics-based datasets upon which the ML model could train was a great introduction into the considerations one must have when applying machine learning to solve real world problems.
